The Ghana Private Road Transport Union in the Volta Region has issued a strong warning to commercial drivers against charging unapproved lorry fares, stressing that offenders will face arrest and possible prosecution.
The Union’s Volta Regional General Secretary, Vida Nkpentey, made this known in an interview with Channel 247 News, where she emphasized that no new fare adjustments have been sanctioned. She cautioned drivers to strictly adhere to the existing fare structure, noting that any deviation would be considered unlawful.
According to her, the GPRTU is yet to conclude discussions with government authorities regarding possible fare increments. She disclosed that a meeting with Cabinet is expected soon, after which a final decision will be communicated to the public.
Madam Nkpentey also warned transport owners against compelling drivers to impose arbitrary fare increases, insisting that such practices are unacceptable within the region.
She further called on passengers to remain vigilant and report any driver who charges unapproved fares to the nearest police station. She assured the public that the Union remains committed to protecting passengers from exploitation.
“For now, there is no approved fare increment, and all drivers are expected to comply,” she stressed.
