Volta minister accuses NPP of neglecting regional development

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sidelining the Volta Region in terms of development during its eight years in government, describing the situation as an “allergy to development.”

Speaking in an interview with Channel 247 News, the Minister expressed disappointment in what he said was the NPP’s long-standing neglect of the region. He contrasted this with the current agenda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by President John Dramani Mahama, which he said is focused on accelerating development across all districts.

According to him, visible progress is already underway, particularly in road infrastructure, where contractors have returned to sites to complete long-abandoned projects. He assured residents that deplorable roads in the region would soon become a thing of the past under the government’s “Big Push” initiative.

The Minister also revealed that 180 mechanized boreholes are currently under construction through the District Assemblies Common Fund to address persistent water challenges. In the health sector, he noted that more than 36 Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds are nearing completion to improve access to primary healthcare.

In education, Mr. Gunu disclosed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has committed to constructing over 270 classroom blocks and facilities for senior high schools across the region. He added that the Youth in Agriculture programme has already provided employment for about 300 young people as part of efforts to reduce unemployment.

He further outlined his key priorities for the year, including strengthening peace and security, enhancing the capacity of district assemblies to drive development, and deepening collaboration among government agencies to achieve the administration’s broader goals.

Touching on specific projects, the Minister cited the Keta Landing Beach redevelopment, which he said had been neglected under the previous administration but is now about 30 percent complete and expected to be commissioned soon.

Mr. Gunu called on residents of the Volta Region to support and trust the NDC government, assuring them of sustained development and improved living conditions.

He maintained that the NPP’s record in the region falls short when compared to the NDC’s current interventions, insisting that the impact of ongoing projects would soon be evident across all districts.
