Police clamp down on drug trafficking in Upper West

The Upper West Regional Police Command has intensified its fight against drug trafficking, leading to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of large quantities of suspected narcotic substances across the region.

Over the past four weeks, coordinated police operations have resulted in multiple seizures in communities including Eremon in the Lawra District, Nadowli Barrier and Loho in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Charke and Siriyiri in the Wa Municipality, Hamile in the Lambussie District, and Funsi in the Wa East District.

In total, police retrieved 218 compressed slabs, 54 parcels, and eight assorted consignments of suspected Indian hemp. Authorities say most of the intercepted consignments were being transported northwards towards Hamile.

Among the key operations, officers at the Wa-Loho barrier on April 1, 2026, intercepted a Royal VVIP bus travelling from Wa to Jirapa and discovered 51 compressed slabs of suspected narcotics. Three suspects—Stephen Lomotey, Solomon King, and Urilius Tobopalee—were arrested in connection with the seizure.

In a separate operation on April 3, 2026, a patrol team at Eremon in the Lawra District stopped a Toyota Corolla and uncovered 140 compressed slabs of suspected Indian hemp. Two suspects, Dennis Domoyel and Clovis Saame, were subsequently apprehended.

The suspects are currently undergoing various stages of investigation and prosecution, while the vehicles used in transporting the illicit substances have been impounded.

The Regional Police Command has cautioned transport owners and unions against allowing their vehicles to be used for illegal activities, warning that such vehicles risk confiscation and legal action.

Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring a safe environment for residents. He also urged the public to volunteer credible information to assist ongoing operations.
