The President of the Ghana Youth Federation, Sherif Ghale, has questioned the government’s commitment to tackling unemployment, accusing successive administrations of failing to match their rhetoric with concrete action.
Speaking on News 247Live, Ghale argued that although governments often acknowledge the critical role of the private sector in job creation, their policies and actions do not reflect that understanding.
“Successive governments have talked about their understanding of how the private sector should be the driver of job creation, but they end up doing nothing,” he stated.
He emphasised that the Federation has consistently advocated for a private sector-led approach, insisting that sustainable and meaningful employment can only be generated through a thriving private enterprise system.
According to him, governments often attempt to build their legacy on direct public sector employment rather than creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and absorb the youth into the workforce.
Ghale also downplayed the significance of recent recruitment into the security services, noting that while such initiatives may offer temporary relief, they do not address the long-standing structural challenges of unemployment.
He urged the government to shift its focus towards engaging the private sector more effectively, understanding its needs, and implementing policies that will strengthen its capacity to create jobs.
“The government should engage the private sector, understand their needs and what they require to expand and create jobs,” he said.
Ghale concluded by calling for a deliberate and honest dialogue between government and business leaders, stressing that empowering the private sector remains the most viable path to sustainable job creation for Ghana’s youth.
