Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru NKZ, has been reinstated by the Appeals Board of the University of Ghana to continue his Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential campaign.
This follows the disqualification of Guru NKZ and his running mate, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, from the race weeks ago. According to the SRC, Guru did not satisfy the conditions that qualify him to contest the position.
After a legal tussle, the judicial board confirmed that the grounds for the disqualification were legitimate. As such, the musician cannot contest the election.
The artist did not relent and filed a court injunction to further investigate the issue, demanding justifications from the council.
After several weeks of court ruling, the Appeals Board decided to unanimously overturn the aspirants’ disqualification during late hours on Sunday, September 15.
Speaking about the processes he underwent to win the ruling in an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Guru NKZ indicated that it was a tough one and has made him learn more about life considering the sector he emanated from.
“It’s not been easy. I would stand here and laugh, but it’s been intense, and the intensity of it has really taught me a lot about life. We all know how showbiz works and we know how to exhibit our talent on the platform, but when it comes to academics and dealing with academia, it’s a different conversation. Even if it is true, defend it, and if you’re not able to project your interest in well-detailed form, you would not be allowed to even come into the race. That’s one thing I’ve realized about anything that has got to do with academics,” he told the host, Asieduwaa Akumia.
He added that the whole process was embarrassing for him, given his public persona in the country, even though it was anticipated. However, it has taught him to stay focused on his goals, and he is excited to be back in the race.
He commended the board for guiding him and broadening his perspective on other aspects of the education field beyond the entertainment industry he is already familiar with.
The aspirant also expressed gratitude to his legal team, who demonstrated their expertise and played a pivotal role in his court victory, noting that the team has been exceptionally supportive.
Having been granted the opportunity to contest, Guru NKZ has assured that he, along with his running mate and campaign team, will put in their best efforts to emerge victorious in the election, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
“The policies are what matter. I am a student, and we know our struggles. The challenges are real, and the majority of students on campus don’t work. We always hope for comfort for them and things that will enhance their academics. Basically, these are the major reasons why I’m vying for the position.”
Mr. Yeboah is optimistic about winning the elections and taking over as the SRC president of the university for the next academic period.
