Residents of New Nkusukum in Mankessim, within the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, have been thrown into shock following the discovery of a decomposed body of a middle-aged pastor in his room days after his death.
The deceased, believed to be in his 60s and popularly known in the area as “Osofo,” was found under disturbing circumstances. His real name and the church he belonged to are yet to be established.
Speaking to Channel 247 News, a resident identified as Brother Philip said the incident came to light after his wife detected a strong and unusual odour emanating from the direction of the deceased’s room.
According to him, his wife had stepped out to hang clothes near the pastor’s house when she noticed an unbearable stench and an unusual swarm of houseflies hovering around the room, raising suspicion that something was wrong.
“She quickly alerted me, and we decided to check on him,” Brother Philip recounted.
Upon entering the room, they discovered the lifeless body of the pastor lying on the floor in a decomposed state, suggesting he had died several days earlier.
Some residents who gathered at the scene said the odour in the area had become overwhelming even before anyone gained access to the room, indicating that the deceased may have been dead for some time.
A neighbour who lived close to the pastor described him as an active and independent man who managed his affairs personally, expressing disbelief over the development.
Another resident revealed that the deceased had recently mentioned he had been transferred to Kumasi and would soon be leaving Mankessim. Neighbours later realised he had, in fact, passed away days earlier.
The Assembly Member for the New Nkusukum Electoral Area, Hon. Sorlin, who also visited the scene, advised individuals who live alone to maintain close contact with family, friends or neighbours to help prevent similar incidents.
The incident has left the community saddened and has raised concerns about social isolation and the need for regular welfare checks, particularly for elderly persons living alone.
The body has since been conveyed to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The case has been reported to the Mankessim Police Command for investigation. No arrests have been made so far.
