Long queues formed early at the Jamestown Police Centre A and B in the Odododiodio constituency as 1,314 registered delegates gathered to cast their ballots in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary.
The voting exercise, which is strictly an internal party process, is being contested by five aspirants: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
Ahead of the polls, the aspirants signed a peace pact, committing themselves and their supporters to a violence-free process and pledging to respect the outcome of the election.
The NPP has reiterated that the presidential primary is an internal exercise and has designated the Ghana Police Service as the sole security agency responsible for maintaining law and order throughout the voting process. Party officials noted that the safety of delegates, electoral officials, and aspirants depends on strict adherence to the security arrangements put in place by the police.
The presidential primaries were approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council and were scheduled early to allow ample time for campaign consolidation and internal coordination ahead of the 2028 general elections.
