The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is today, Saturday, January 31, 2026, conducting its presidential primary to choose a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, marking a key milestone in the party’s reorganisation following the 2024 polls.
An estimated 211,000 accredited delegates are expected to take part in the exercise, which is being held at more than 300 designated polling centres across the country. Party officials say the scale of participation reflects the importance the NPP attaches to internal democracy and unity ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Five prominent party figures are vying for the mandate to lead the NPP into the 2028 contest. They include former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
In the build-up to the polls, all the aspirants signed a peace pact, pledging to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful manner and to accept the results of the election. The agreement also commits their supporters to refrain from acts that could undermine the credibility of the process.
The NPP has emphasised that the presidential primary is an internal party exercise and has entrusted security entirely to the Ghana Police Service. According to the party, the police have exclusive responsibility for maintaining law and order at all polling centres to ensure the safety of delegates, party officials and aspirants.
Party leadership explains that holding the primaries early was a strategic decision approved by the National Executive Committee and the National Council. The move is intended to give the eventual flagbearer ample time to consolidate support, strengthen party structures and build momentum ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Voting is expected to conclude later today, after which counting will be conducted at the various centres before results are collated and officially declared by the party.
