The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced that the resettlement of communities displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage is underway, as government intensifies efforts to restore livelihoods and improve living conditions for affected families.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister said a total of 2,225 housing units have been validated for reconstruction across four regions following the floods.
Phase One of the resettlement programme involves the construction of 1,010 housing units within the three critical impact zones of North Tongu, Central Tongu and South Tongu in the Volta Region.
According to him, construction activities are currently ongoing at eight locations across the three districts, with work progressing at varying levels due to site accessibility, land acquisition challenges and contractor performance. He noted that steady progress has been made at sites such as Agbetikpo-Ganyakope and Battor Aveyime.
However, the Minister acknowledged delays at some locations, including Mepe and Nglorlekpoe, attributing them to unresolved land ownership disputes, legal challenges and difficult terrain conditions. He assured that the ministry is working closely with district assemblies and relevant stakeholders to address these challenges.
Hon. Adjei reaffirmed government’s commitment to completing the resettlement project and ensuring that flood victims are relocated to safe, dignified and resilient housing.
He stressed that the programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen disaster response and climate resilience across the country.
