Volta health directorate confirms arrest of driver over narcotics

The Volta Regional Health Directorate has confirmed the arrest of one of its drivers by the Ghana Police Service in Ho over the alleged unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs.

In a press release dated January 25, 2026, the Directorate said it had taken note of a viral news item concerning the incident and was issuing the statement “to bring clarity to the matter.”

According to the Directorate, on Friday, January 23, 2026, its Transport Unit received information that the driver, Mr. Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, had been arrested and detained at the Regional Police Headquarters in Ho.

“The arrest was on account of driving a vehicle with registration number GV 2460-14 belonging to the Directorate, reportedly loaded with items suspected to be narcotic substances,” the statement said.

Management of the Volta Regional Health Directorate subsequently dispatched a team to the Regional Police Headquarters to verify the information, where the incident was confirmed by the Police.

The Directorate noted that Mr. Dogbey is currently in police custody and “assisting with investigations,” as the Ghana Police Service continues its probe into the matter.

In addition to the police investigations, the Directorate announced that it has initiated processes to constitute a Committee of Enquiry to independently investigate the incident.

“Measures are also being put in place to strengthen monitoring and tracking of all official vehicles to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” the statement added.

The Volta Regional Health Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to “upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the delivery of health services,” and assured the public of its cooperation with all relevant authorities.

The statement was signed by the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor.
