NPP presidential aspirants sign peace pact ahead of primaries

Presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace pact committing themselves to unity, discipline and mutual respect as the party prepares for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The aspirants who endorsed the agreement are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

The peace pact was signed on Thursday, January 22, at a ceremony addressed by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who cautioned that internal divisions could jeopardise the party’s chances of returning to power in the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the aspirants and party supporters, Afenyo-Markin described life in opposition as painful and isolating, urging members to prioritise unity before, during and after the primaries.

“I say that opposition is painful and lonely. We know this. Good friends don’t pick up calls. They ignore us and they find new friends. We are living it. We feel it every day and surely none of us wants to remain there,” he said.

He stressed that the NPP’s path back to power lies in discipline, sacrifice and collective effort rather than internal rivalry.

“But power does not come through division. Power comes through discipline. Power comes through unity. Power comes through sacrifice,” Afenyo-Markin emphasised.

He further described internal party elections as a critical test of the NPP’s institutional strength, discipline and commitment to shared values, urging aspirants and their supporters to rise above anger, insults and short-term emotions.

The January 31, 2026, primary date was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to allow adequate time for campaigning and internal coordination ahead of the 2028 general elections.
