NAIMOS officer shot, assailant killed during anti-galamsey operation

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed that one of its personnel was shot during a routine anti-galamsey operation on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in the Bono Region.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the incident occurred in a bush along the Subinkuro–Kyeremasu stretch within the Dormaa Central Municipality when armed individuals hiding in the area opened fire on the NAIMOS task force.

The attack triggered an exchange of gunfire, during which one NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. The injured officer was quickly transported to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkuro, where he is currently responding to treatment.

During the confrontation, one of the armed assailants was shot and later pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital. The deceased has been identified as Abuu Ibrahim.

NAIMOS assured the public that despite the violent resistance faced by its operatives, the Secretariat remains resolute in its mandate to combat illegal mining activities across the country. It also called on stakeholders and the public to continue supporting efforts aimed at protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
