Ayawaso East by-election set for March 3 – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure.

In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the Commission stated that the seat has become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, thereby necessitating the conduct of a by-election.

The EC indicated that nominations will be received from prospective candidates from Monday, February 9, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The exercise will take place at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s official website from Friday, January 16, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Completed forms may be submitted personally by the candidate or through their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer within the stipulated period.

According to the EC, each nomination form must be witnessed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder and supported by eighteen other registered voters in the constituency. The forms must also carry the candidate’s written consent to the nomination.

Candidates are further required to submit two copies of a recent bust-sized postcard photograph against a red background, clearly showing the full face and ears, at the time of filing their nominations. All nomination forms are to be submitted in quadruplicate.

The filing fee for the by-election has been pegged at GH¢10,000.00 per candidate, while female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.00. The Commission urged the general public and prospective candidates to take note of the guidelines and comply accordingly.
