Miracles Aboagye has defended the economic record of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the reduction in inflation before the 2024 elections showed the party had the capacity to stabilise and permanently fix Ghana’s economy.
Speaking at The People’s Forum, Aboagye said inflation declined from over 50 per cent to 23 per cent by December 2024, arguing that this was clear evidence of effective economic management.
“If we could move inflation from over 50% down to 23% by December 2024, then you could believe that we could fix the economy,” he stated.
He rejected claims that the NPP failed in government, noting that the party oversaw the construction of numerous schools and health facilities and initiated industrialisation efforts that led to the establishment of more than 120 factories nationwide.
According to him, although the country faced economic hardship by 2024, the NPP had already put systems in place that required time to yield lasting results. He cited the Gold Purchase Programme as a major intervention capable of strengthening the economy in the long term.
Aboagye accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of demonising the NPP ahead of the 2024 elections, a strategy he said contributed to the party’s defeat. He, however, accepted the election outcome as part of democratic governance.
He criticised the current administration, saying that after 12 months in office, the NDC had failed to significantly improve the living conditions of Ghanaians despite claims of currency stabilisation.
“People are told the dollar has come down, yet school fees remain high, water is expensive, and jobs are still scarce,” he said.
Aboagye urged the government to fulfil all its campaign promises, stressing that the opposition would continue to hold it accountable.
“We are not going to allow what happened between 2009 and 2012 to happen again. The NDC must do what it promised the people,” he added.
