UBIDS Governing Council Approves Establishment of a School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Governing Council of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) at its 4th Special Council Meeting, held at Aburi, in the Eastern Region on 8th and 9th December 2025, approved the establishment of a School of Medicine and Health Sciences. This decision marks yet another major milestone in the University’s growth and its contribution to national development.

This approval is a result of years of planning, extensive stakeholder consultations, and the development of a distinctive, forward looking curriculum. It reflects the University’s strong commitment to expanding market-driven academic opportunities while addressing the critical shortage of health care professionals in the Upper West Region, Northern Ghana, and the country at large.

If approved by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the new School will run programmes in medicine, nursing, midwifery, public health, and allied health sciences. To facilitate clinical and community-based training, the University is collaborating with the Upper West Regional Hospital, which will serve as a key teaching facility for the School. Additionally, the district hospitals will help ensure students encounter a diverse range of real-world health challenges and also provide opportunities of healthcare to deprived communities.

The establishment of the School is more than an academic expansion; it is a courageous and optimistic investment in the future of healthcare in Northern Ghana and the country at large. It will position the University to become a centre of excellence for medical and health sciences education, while offering new opportunities for young people in the region and country at large.

With this decision, the University is advancing towards its vision and mandate for becoming a leading centre of academic excellence that combines innovation, practical training, and community service for promoting integrated development.
