The one-week memorial service for the late Samuel Aboagye, held at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, August 13, became a deeply emotional occasion as tributes poured in from colleagues, friends, and government officials.
The Director-General of NADMO, Major (Rtd.) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, described Aboagye as “a future leader” and a dedicated patriot whose commitment to duty, compassion for colleagues, and willingness to share in others’ burdens made him a role model for the youth.
“Anytime I encountered Aboagye, I saw a future leader… He would always say, ‘Come, let me share your frustrations with you.’ That is the kind of person we are here to honour today,” Dr. Kuyon said, his voice heavy with emotion. He urged Ghanaians to draw strength from the lives and values of Aboagye and other victims of the recent tragedy, calling their passing “a national loss.”
Offering condolences to the bereaved families — including President John Dramani Mahama, who is the Chief Mourner — Dr. Kuyon noted that the outpouring of love and solidarity reflected the unity of the NADMO family. “To my son, Samuel Abu Aje,” he concluded, “may God grant you rest in His bosom. Rest well, my son.”
Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, also paid a heartfelt tribute, describing Aboagye as a beacon of hope and a man whose life touched many. He recounted a chance encounter during the 2024 elections that blossomed into a warm friendship, recalling how a tense phone call unexpectedly led to a deep connection.
Terlabi praised Aboagye as “a lovely person” and “a devoted member of the Church of Pentecost,” noting that his humility and faith left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Quoting the scripture, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain,” he reflected on the mystery of life and death, adding, “The same God who brought Aboagye into our lives has now called him home. Who are we to question His will?”
The Deputy Minister urged the public, as well as colleagues at the Interior Ministry and NADMO, to maintain close ties with Aboagye’s family and continue supporting his wife and children, assuring that the government has committed to their welfare.
“As we grieve, let us remember that his life was a blessing, and his memory will continue to inspire us,” he concluded.
