The Governing NDC’s executives in the Bawku enclave have threatened to suspend all party activities in the area if the government does not resolve the long-standing communal conflict in the area. Their demand follows renewed tension in Bawku after a statue of the overlord of the area, Naaba Asigri Abugraogo Azoka II was allegedly pulled down by some military personnel who have also been accused of brutalizing some residents.
The executives are demanding investigations into recent killings in the area and an immediate public apology to the overlord of the area over the desecration of his statue.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Yusuf Otumba, the Bawku Central Communications Officer for the NDC said, ”we demand the immediate restoration of Bawku Naaba’s statue and a public apology to the overlord and citizens. We also want an independent investigation into the murder of innocent civilians including women and children by the military. We also want the immediate withdrawal and replacement of the current military and police leadership in the area since they have lost the moral standing in the sight of the people”.
Mr. Otumba went further to caution his own party the NDC saying, ”the NDC must choose to stand with the people or stand aside. The Kusaug Traditional Council banned all NPP activities and gave NDC a clean path to victory, the people now watch and wait. Let the government be warned, inaction is betrayal and betrayal has consequences. Should these demands be ignored, we the entire NDC executives in the Kusaug areas will resign from our positions to protect our lives. Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we refuse to be complicit in this grave injustice, let this press conference be our final caution to the government.”
