Sam George Slams Telecel Over Unjustified Broadband Price Hike, Calls for Reversal

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has expressed strong disapproval of Telecel Ghana’s recent decision to increase its fixed broadband prices. Describing the move as unjustified, Sam George stated that urgent steps are being taken to engage the company and relevant regulators to address the issue.

According to him, a meeting is scheduled with the CEO of Telecel Ghana and other key stakeholders to discuss the matter and push for an immediate reversal of the price hike stressing that such unilateral actions by service providers undermine efforts to make digital services affordable and accessible to all Ghanaians.

Sam George also issued a stern warning to network providers, cautioning that those who fail to comply with approved pricing structures for fixed data services will face sanctions.

“The government is fully committed to ensuring that broadband services remain affordable, fair, and within the reach of every Ghanaian,” he said. “We will not tolerate actions that compromise this objective.”

Meanwhile, the minister has announced increases in data bundle allocations across all telecommunication networks in Ghana, effective July 1, 2025.

The Minister revealed these changes during a press conference in Accra today, highlighting successful negotiations with network operators.

“I am pleased to announce that my engagement with the CEOs has resulted in the following specific measures,” Mr. Nartey stated.  He acknowledged the financial impact on operators saying “I am aware these increases will come at considerable cost to the network operators.”

“However, I am glad that our engagements and consultations are bearing fruit for the Ghanaian people.”
