Mahama pledges additional holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to the Muslim community by announcing plans to introduce an additional holiday for Ei-ul-Fitr.

This initiative is part of Mahama’s broader agenda to honour promises made during his election campaign and to acknowledge the contributions of the Muslim community to national development.

The proposed amendment will allow Muslims to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with two days of festivities, emphasizing the importance of the occasion.

Speaking at the National Prayers and Thanksgiving service held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, 2025, Mahama said:

“We promised to add one more holiday to the Eid ul-Fitr. So as soon as Parliament settles, we’re going to amend the Holidays Act to include an extra holiday on the occasion. And so this year, after we finish the fast of the Ramadan, we will have two holidays.”
