The United States has extended its congratulations to Ghana’s Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society organisations, and security forces for their roles in ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken in a statement praising Ghana’s commitment to democratic values and the peaceful conduct of its electoral process also congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama following the Electoral Commission’s declaration of results in the country’s presidential election.
In his statement, Secretary Blinken highlighted the significance of Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s victory, marking her as Ghana’s first female vice president.
“We extend further congratulations to Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on this historic achievement,” he said, noting its importance in advancing gender representation in leadership.
The U.S. also applauded Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results, underscoring its role in strengthening democratic norms.
While recognising the overall success of the elections, the United States expressed concern over reports of isolated incidents of violence, including deaths.
Secretary Blinken offered condolences to the families of the deceased and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
“We urge Ghanaian authorities to pursue justice for these incidents in keeping with the country’s commitment to the rule of law,” he said.
The United States reaffirmed its longstanding partnership with Ghana, expressing optimism for continued collaboration under the leadership of President-elect Mahama.
“We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to advance our historic relationship,” Blinken stated, emphasising shared goals of prosperity, security, and democracy.
Ghana’s successful election has once again solidified its reputation as a model for democratic governance in Africa. The United States pledged to support the nation’s ongoing progress, celebrating the peaceful transition of power as a testament to Ghana’s vibrant democratic culture.
