Youth Development and Empowerment Minister Unveils Strategic Agenda to Transform Potentials

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has outlined the ministry’s comprehensive strategy to address the urgent needs of Ghana’s youth. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister emphasized President John Mahama’s vision of harnessing the demographic dividend through the newly established ministry, which is central to the administration’s “resetting agenda”.

Minister Opare Addo reiterated that the creation of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment reflects the government’s recognition of young people as catalysts for socio-economic progress. “This initiative acknowledges the vital role our youth play in shaping Ghana’s future and aims to unlock their immense potential for national benefit,” he stated.

To streamline efforts, key agencies have been realigned under the ministry’s supervision, including:
National Youth Authority (NYA) will coordinate youth empowerment activities and leadership development, Youth Employment Agency (YEA)will be spearheading job creation and skills matching, National Service Authority: mobilizing young citizens for national service, while the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat will support education for underprivileged youth.

The Minister highlighted that every policy and intervention is youth-centric, with initiatives like the 24-hour economy strategy which is aimed at combating unemployment and also create regional tech hubs to foster digital inclusion. “Our programs are crafted to equip youth with skills, resources, and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods,” he added, citing collaborations with civil society and global partners to ensure accountability and transparency.

George Opare Addo urged stakeholders, including the Youth Bridge Foundation and private sector actors, to amplify advocacy and partnerships. “We must all make noise to ensure no young Ghanaian is left behind,” he concluded, inviting participation in upcoming initiatives like the Tullow Alumni Connect Job Fair to bridge the employment gap.

With its ambitious framework, the ministry aims to set a new standard for youth-focused governance, aligning Ghana with global best practices while addressing local challenges head-on.
