Richard Boadi confirmed as Kumasi Mayor, tasked with decongestion and market reform

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has confirmed Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi as its new Chief Executive Officer, following a near-unanimous vote of confidence from assembly members at a meeting on Thursday.

Mr. Boadi, who previously served as Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama.

He secured 55 out of 56 votes cast in a decisive confirmation exercise held at the KMA chambers on Thursday.

This landslide approval signals strong backing for the new mayor as he takes the reins of Ghana’s second-largest city.

Prioritise decongestion

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, charged the newly confirmed mayor to focus on some of the city’s pressing challenges.

“I urge you to prioritise decongesting the city, improve sanitation, and work to address key challenges at the Kejetia Market,” he said.

“These issues continue to slow development in the Kumasi Metropolis,” Dr Amoakohene added, assuring that the Regional Coordinating Council will work closely with the Assembly to tackle the problems confronting residents.

Mr. Boadi joins a long line of notable past mayors of Kumasi under the 4th Republican 1992 Constitution, including Nana Akwasi Agyeman [Okumkom] who served as Mayor under President J.J. Rawlings from 1993 to January 2001, followed by Maxwell Kofi Jumah and Patricia Appiagyei who both served from 2001 to 2004 and 2005 to January 6, 2009 respectively under President J.A. Kufuor.

Samuel Sarpong followed them from 2009 to 2013 under President J.E.A. Mills and President John Mahama.

Kojo Bonsu followed Samuel Sarpong under President Mahama until the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration handed over to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2017. Osei Assibey Antwi became mayor in 2017 under President Akufo-Addo followed by Samuel Pyne.
