Prez Mahama appeals to Asantehene for support in addressing economic challenges

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to use his influence to support efforts aimed at addressing Ghana’s economic challenges.

The appeal was made during a visit to the Manhyia Palace on January 19, where President Mahama joined the first Akwasidae celebration of the year.

Acknowledging Ghana’s current economic difficulties, President Mahama described the situation as unprecedented in its scale and complexity.

“Our nation Ghana is facing a dire economic crisis. While this is not the first time we have been in such a crisis, this particular crisis is characterised by a high rate of inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default which has shut us out of the international credit market,” he said.

He likened the situation to economic challenges faced during his previous tenure as President between 2013 and 2017, noting the pivotal role played by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in fostering stability and growth at that time.

“I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smoothen the path so that it could open up the path towards prosperity and progress,” Mahama said. “And anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. I would like to thank you for the cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time.”

As Ghana navigates its current economic turbulence, Mahama reiterated his commitment to seeking the Asantehene’s counsel. “As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. And I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate so that we work together to put our nation back on its feet.”

President Mahama also reaffirmed his commitment to the development of the Ashanti Region, pledging to complete stalled and abandoned infrastructure projects, particularly in the healthcare sector.

In response, the Asantehene urged President Mahama to honour his promises to the people of Ghana. Speaking through the Paramount Chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Asantehene expressed confidence in Mahama’s leadership.

“We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom,” he said.

Otumfuo emphasised the importance of ongoing developmental projects, stating, “We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down. All ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across all kingdoms, you will fulfil them.”
