NPP failed Ghana in road maintenance – Agbodza

Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as a failure to prioritise road maintenance over the past eight years, resulting in significant neglect of the country’s existing road network.

Speaking during his vetting on Monday, January 20, Agbodza emphasised that maintaining the country’s current roads should be a higher priority than constructing new ones.

However, he argued that road maintenance has deteriorated significantly under the NPP administration, with the records from previous years being far superior to current efforts.

The Adaklu MP pointed to a stark contrast in the numbers, noting that in 2016, the country had managed to maintain 9,000 kilometres of roads. However, by 2023, under the NPP government, only 3,000 kilometres of roads had been maintained, illustrating a significant decline in the country’s commitment to road upkeep.

“The principle is that you should spend more on the maintenance of your existing roads than building new roads. Per the records we have in terms of road maintenance, things have gone bad in the last eight years.

“In fact the record maintenance we have for 2016 is unmatched till today. If you check the 2023 records, in areas where we did 9,000km, the NPP was just doing 3,000 km. So, they have really let the country down in terms of road maintenance programme,” he stated.
