The government is preparing to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport, Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has announced.
According to Mr Ayariga, the proposed change will be effected through a bill to be laid before Parliament as part of the legislative business of the current parliamentary session. He disclosed this while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
He explained that the decision forms part of broader efforts by the government to ensure that the names of public institutions reflect Ghana’s democratic values and national identity.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” Mr Ayariga said, stressing that the process would strictly follow constitutional and legal procedures. He added that Parliament would play a central role in deliberating on the proposed change, guided by the will of the people.
Kotoka International Airport is Ghana’s main international aviation hub, serving as the country’s primary gateway for passenger travel, cargo operations and diplomatic movements. Any change to its name would require amendments to official state records, aviation documents and related international filings.
Although the Majority Leader did not indicate when the bill would be formally laid before the House, he noted that it falls under the Transport Ministry’s legislative programme for the ongoing session.
The proposed renaming is expected to spark public debate due to the historical significance of the airport’s current name, with Parliament anticipated to provide a platform for national discussion once the matter is officially brought before the House.
