Interior Minister Assures Peaceful Akwatia By-Election

‎The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has assured Ghanaians that the upcoming Akwatia by-election will be peaceful and well-secured, despite recent disturbances witnessed during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

‎Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 14, the Minister addressed growing concerns about election-related violence. He emphasized that lessons have been learned from the Ablekuma North incident, and proactive steps are already being taken to ensure Akwatia does not suffer a similar fate.

‎“We understand the tension following the Ablekuma North re-run, but I want to assure the nation that the Akwatia by-election will be peaceful,” he stated. “The necessary security arrangements will be put in place to protect lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process.”

‎Hon. Mohammed-Mubarak reaffirmed the government’s commitment to law and order, stating that the Ministry of the Interior is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other relevant agencies to prevent any acts of violence or intimidation in Akwatia.

‎“We will not allow chaos to define our democracy. Akwatia will be different—there will be order, there will be safety, and there will be peace,” he assured.

‎His comments come in the wake of public outrage following violent scenes and attacks during the Ablekuma North rerun. The Minister has already directed the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly on those incidents and ensure justice is served.
