I’ll lay L.I legalising cannabis without delay – Muntaka

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has assured Ghanaians of his unwavering commitment to ensuring the swift enactment of the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023.

This landmark legislation, once passed, will grant the Ministry of Interior the authority to issue licenses for the cultivation of cannabis, unlocking its potential for industrial, medicinal, and economic benefits.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, Muntaka emphasised the importance of the bill and promised extensive consultations with stakeholders, including President John Dramani Mahama, experts, and Members of Parliament.

The Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023 represents a progressive shift in Ghana’s approach to cannabis regulation.

By granting the Ministry of Interior the power to license the cultivation of cannabis, the bill aims to harness the plant’s potential for economic growth, industrial use, and medical research.

In his remarks, Muntaka underscored the significance of the legislation and its alignment with global trends.

“The board will be there and the President will be made aware of the law and I believe that once it is in tandem with his vision, you can be rest assured that I will lay it without delay.

“But obviously, I will have to listen to the experts and make a decision afterwards and I know my way around this House and I know how to get things done.”

Muntaka also highlighted the critical role of collaboration in the legislative process. He plans to engage with key stakeholders, including the Narcotics Control Commission, civil society organizations, healthcare professionals, and traditional authorities, to ensure that the bill is comprehensive and addresses all concerns.
