The government has denied allegations of political persecution against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, insists that the judicial process follows constitutional requirements.
The rebuttal came during an emergency press conference at Jubilee House on Wednesday, directly responding to Justice Torkornoo’s controversial public address barely an hour prior.
Kwakye Ofosu stressed that President John Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice was based solely on established constitutional procedures, not political motives.
The government spokesperson directly addressed Justice Torkornoo’s claims of unfair treatment during the investigation.
Justice Gertrude Torkonoo at a press conference on Wednesday quizzed whether the process has been staged to achieve a certain outcome. She asked, ”So what if these current proceedings are being carefully staged to result in my removal as Chief Justice – even if there is no lawful justification?
She accused the committee of opting to use the Adu Lodge as the center of the hearing just to make her feel insecure. ”It will be recalled that Major Sam Acquah, the military officer who was killed with the three High Court Judges, had been the Director of Human Resources of GIHOC.
He was my uncle and my guardian when I entered the University of Ghana in September 1980. I was also living with him at the time he was abducted and murdered. Was Adu Lodge chosen for this inquiry to make me feel insecure? I think so. And I continue to hold the view that there is no reason to hold a quasi judicial hearing behind the high walls of Adu Lodge”, Justice Torkonoo intimated.
But reacting to the claims, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu explained that security protocols at Osu Castle were standard procedure for high-profile cases, not personal intimidation tactics.
