Family Of Late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi Officially Inform Parliament of His Death

The family of the late former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Hon. Ernest Kumi, has officially informed the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, of his passing.

Led by the Chief of Takrowaso, Osabarima Owusu Nketia I, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Speaker at Parliament House to deliver the news and begin formal engagements. The visit forms part of parliamentary tradition when a former lawmaker passes away.

Speaker Bagbin expressed his  condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to the late MP for his commitment to public service. He noted that Parliament recognizes and honours the contributions of its past members and assured the family of the House’s full support during the funeral process.

Details of the final funeral rites are expected to be announced by the family in due course.

Background

Hon. Ernest Kumi, a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was widely respected for his sharp insights and active participation in parliamentary business. Known for his calm demeanour and dedication to his constituents, Mr. Kumi’s death has left a notable void in Ghana’s political landscape.

His passing comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned a contempt conviction against him in connection with the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results—a legal battle that had drawn national attention.

Tributes from lawmakers across the political divide have been pouring in, with many describing him as a principled and selfless leader who upheld the values of democracy and service.
