A viral flyer circulating on social media has falsely claimed that Mavis Kumi, the widow of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, is contesting the upcoming by-election. The flyer has since been exposed as misleading and inaccurate.
The flyer, which features an image of Mrs. Kumi alongside New Patriotic Party (NPP) colours and bold campaign slogans, quickly gained traction online, sparking speculation of a political succession within the grieving family. However, multiple credible sources have debunked the flyer.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, former Denkyembour District Chief Executive Seth Ofosu Birikorang described the flyer as “misinformation,” noting that it caused distress to the bereaved family. He further clarified that the woman’s correct name is Mavis Asiamah, not Mavis Kumi.
On Tuesday, July 15, the Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party issued a statement dismissing the flyer as “a fabrication that does not reflect the intentions of Mrs. Asiamah or the position of the party.”
“We urge all party members, residents of Akwatia, and the general public to disregard the flyer in circulation. It is not only false but highly insensitive to the Kumi family, who are still mourning the painful loss of Hon. Ernest Kumi,” the statement read.
The party clarified that Mavis Asiamah has shown no interest in politics and had no knowledge of the flyer, which was produced and circulated without her consent.
Adding to the condemnation, Mr. Birikorang emphasized that the flyer contained “basic factual errors” and was completely unauthorized.
“Mrs. Asiamah has not spoken to anyone about entering politics. The flyer is a clear attempt to exploit her image and the public’s emotions. It should be disregarded with contempt,” he stated.
The NPP has warned that such false publications not only mislead the public but also deepen the grief of a mourning family. The party has called on those behind the circulation of the fake flyer to desist immediately, stressing that it will not tolerate the politicization of personal tragedy.
