The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has reaffirmed its opposition to the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchwey as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, arguing that it breaches their code of conduct.
The association has renewed its strike in protest against Botchwey’s appointment, citing his alleged affiliation with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a violation of civil service neutrality.
The strike, which began on Thursday, February 20, is a continuation of CLOGSAG’s stance against what it sees as the politicization of the civil service. The group insists that appointing a politically exposed individual undermines professionalism and impartiality in the public sector.
Despite appeals from the Presidency and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment to end the industrial action, CLOGSAG remains firm in its demand for Botchwey’s removal.
The association argues that non-partisan appointments are essential for maintaining the integrity of public institutions.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Monday, March 10, CLOGSAG’s Public Relations Officer, Edmund Acquaye, emphasized that the Registrar of Births and Deaths role is strictly a civil service position and should not be politicized.
“We cannot let this go because it breaches our vow and rules and codes of conduct with the civil and local government service.
“That particular position—being the Registrar of Births and Deaths—is a clear-cut civil service position. It is not a political position,” Acquaye stated.
