Government has taken drastic measures in response to escalating violence in the troubled Upper East town of Bawku following the killing of a third-year student on Saturday, 26th July, 2025.
As part of the new measures, curfew hours have now been put at 2PM to 6AM effective Sunday, 27th July, 2025 and military have been deployed to enforce peace instead of maintaining it in the area as well as Nalerigu in the North East Region where two students of the Nalerigu Senior High School were also killed by gunmen on Saturday night.
A statement issued by the interior ministry also announced a ban against residents possessing guns and ammunition. The ministry indicated that anyone who flouts the ban will be arrested and prosecuted.
Another statement issued by the Presidency, urged the feuding factions to refrain from hostilities as efforts are being made to resolve the crisis.
The violence in the area came to a head when a third-year student of the Bawku Senior High School was killed on Saturday night forcing authorities to close it down with just two weeks to the start of this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination.
