The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public that it is taking firm steps to investigate and bring to justice all individuals involved in acts of violence and assault during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In a statement signed by Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Accra Region, Superintendent Juliana Obeng the Police confirmed that there were isolated incidents of violence at some polling stations which caused temporary disruptions to the electoral process.
“Preliminary reports indicate that these incidents caused temporary disruptions to the otherwise peaceful conduct of the election in some polling stations. Police officers intervened promptly to restore calm and ensure voting continued without further interruptions,” the statement read.
The Police further noted that efforts are underway to identify all perpetrators of violence, intimidation, or any breach of the peace that occurred during the rerun. Those found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command also called on members of the public to assist with ongoing investigations by sharing relevant information. Citizens with information on individuals involved in the disturbances are encouraged to contact the Police via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
The Ablekuma North rerun election was conducted in 19 polling stations due to earlier disputes over irregularities. The exercise, though largely peaceful, was marred by pockets of violence, including reported assaults on candidates and election observers.
According to the Police, they remain committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that future electoral processes are conducted in a safe and peaceful environment.
