Volta Regional House of Chiefs condemn EOCO over alleged court defiance

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has strongly condemned the conduct of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over what it describes as actions that appear to defy a High Court ruling.

In a press statement dated April 7, 2026, and signed by its President, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, the House expressed deep concern about EOCO’s handling of a case involving the Volta Region’s representative on the Council of State, Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple.

According to the statement, the High Court determined that EOCO acted without lawful mandate and in breach of constitutional principles of fairness. Despite what the chiefs described as a “clear and unequivocal” ruling, EOCO is alleged to have continued actions that challenge the authority of the judiciary.

The House criticised this approach, stressing that any dissatisfaction with a court decision must be addressed through established appellate procedures rather than actions that could be interpreted as defiance.

It further warned that disregard for judicial authority undermines public confidence in the legal system and poses a threat to Ghana’s constitutional order. The chiefs emphasised that no institution or public office holder is above the law.

Calling for restraint, the traditional leaders urged EOCO to demonstrate full respect for the courts and adhere strictly to due process. They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding justice, protecting the rule of law, and safeguarding the integrity of the country’s democratic institutions.

The statement concluded with a firm condemnation of EOCO’s posture, describing it as an affront to administrative justice and a development that could heighten public debate on institutional accountability and the balance of power between state agencies and the judiciary.
