The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railways Authority, Dr. Frederick Appoh, has announced that the second phase of Big Push policy under President John Dramani Mahama will prioritise the expansion of railway infrastructure across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Channel 247 News, Dr. Appoh revealed that government, in collaboration with the Authority, is developing policies aimed at extending railway lines nationwide in the coming years. He said the initiative is expected to significantly improve transportation, making travel faster, safer and more efficient within Ghana and across its borders.
According to him, the focus on railways forms a key part of the administration’s broader plan to modernise the transport sector and stimulate economic growth. He added that ongoing projects include efforts to link Ghana’s railway network to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, a move expected to enhance regional trade and connectivity.
Dr. Appoh, however, acknowledged that the sector continues to face challenges inherited from the previous administration. He cited poorly executed railway projects, which he said were rushed into operation without meeting required standards, leading to persistent operational difficulties.
Despite these setbacks, he expressed optimism about the future of the sector, noting that patronage is gradually increasing. More than 6,000 passengers currently use railway services weekly, a development he attributed to ongoing reforms and government commitment to the industry.
“As CEO, I will do my best to improve our railway system as a key means of transportation,” he assured.
Meanwhile, at the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) refresher programme held at the University of Education, Winneba’s Ajumako Campus, leaders of the opposition National Democratic Congress encouraged students to actively participate in politics and support the party’s vision for national development.
Addressing participants under the theme “Empowering Fresh Minds on Leadership in Political Participation to Build the Ghana We Want Together,” party officials urged students to place their confidence in the NDC, describing it as the political tradition most committed to youth empowerment.
They highlighted the rise of prominent figures such as Sammy Gyamfi, Cassiel Ato Forson and Samuel Nartey George, noting that their political journeys began at the tertiary level.
The leaders also assured students of continued support, pledging to honour campaign promises and address challenges confronting young people on campuses across the country.
