A fire outbreak has destroyed part of the girls’ dormitory at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region, causing significant damage to school property and students’ personal belongings.
The incident affected a dormitory block made up of ten rooms on both wings of the building, with two rooms completely burnt. The fire was spreading to a third room before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived and brought the situation under control.
Items destroyed in the blaze include school beds, chop boxes, mosquito nets, students’ books, and other personal effects, leaving several students displaced.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, a distress call was received, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Sagnarigu Municipal Fire Station.
Due to the intensity of the fire, reinforcement was requested from the Tamale Metro Fire Station to support efforts at the scene.
The combined efforts of both fire teams successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the entire dormitory block, averting further damage.
No casualties were recorded in the incident. However, some students who experienced fear and panic were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Officials confirmed that the affected students suffered shock and distress, not injuries from falls or structural collapse. Preliminary reports indicate the fire may have originated from the school’s electricity meter, following an electrical fault reportedly noticed the previous day.
