President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, following the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council, in consultation with the Council of State, and in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision, announced on Monday, August 18th, forms part of the President’s constitutional mandate to exercise the prerogative of mercy in deserving cases. According to the Presidency, a total of 1,014 inmates were recommended for amnesty, out of which 998 were approved after due consideration.
The Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the development in a statement, describing it as a measure to give reformed inmates a second chance at reintegration into society.
The amnesty is expected to help decongest prisons across the country while offering inmates who have shown signs of rehabilitation the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
