Kpando MCE Evacuates 38-Year-Old Refuse Dumps

The Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Killian Donkor has successfully overseen the evacuation of refuse dumps that have been left unattended for over 30 years in the municipality.

The decades-old waste sites included Gabi Agorneme, Kudzra, and Gbefi, which had become an eyesore and a breeding ground for diseases, were cleared as part of a wider sanitation improvement drive by the assembly. According to Hon. Donkor, the move is aimed at improving public health, restoring environmental cleanliness, and promoting the image of the municipality.

Residents expressed relief and gratitude over the development, noting that the refuse piles had long  posed serious health risks, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water and decomposing waste fueled outbreaks of cholera and other diseases.

Speaking to channel 247 Correspondent Gaglo Thywill Enam, Hon. Donkor emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable waste management systems in Kpando. He hinted at plans to introduce modern waste collection points and public education campaigns on proper waste disposal practices.

“This is not just a one-time clean-up. We are putting measures in place to ensure that our city remains clean and free from such environmental hazards,” he said.

The exercise, which began earlier this week, forms part of the Municipal Assembly’s broader agenda to enhance sanitation, beautify public spaces, and promote healthy living for residents.

On his part, the Municipal Environmental Health Analyst, Mr. Peter Pariki-Kwashie also in an interview indicates that those refuse dumps are not only an eyesore but it is a pollutants to the environment which pollute the air with the offensive smell within the communities.

He also indicated that the decaying materials of the refuse dump also pollute the ground water through leachate.

He applauded the MCE and the Municipal Assembly for the kind gesture indicating that the MCE and the Assembly are really showing commitment towards sanitation in the municipality.
