The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has revealed that 10,000 National Service Personnel will be enrolled in a special emergency response training programme starting August 2025.
The initiative, known as the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme, seeks to build the capacity of service personnel in areas of public safety, disaster management, and national security.
Providing updates on the Defence Ministry’s efforts on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah said the six-week programme will be run in two batches between August and October.
“The training will offer basic military orientation and emergency preparedness skills,” he noted. “It is entirely voluntary—no one is being forced to take part.”
The programme’s curriculum includes basic life support, first aid, fire safety, disaster response, leadership, mentorship, loyalty, patriotism, and nationalism.
According to the Minister, the first phase targets 10,000 NSS volunteers, but there are plans to scale it up in subsequent years.
“This is about preparing our young people to respond to emergencies and contribute meaningfully to the nation in times of crisis,” he said.
Dr. Boamah reiterated that the exercise is not mandatory, highlighting the importance of voluntary civic participation in strengthening national resilience.
