Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Mr. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has delivered a blistering critique of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, blaming him for the current unrest within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and accusing party leadership of unfairly elevating him through a controversial waiver.
“It’s true, Bawumia is part of the problem that is happening now in the NPP. And I have reasons for saying that he is part of the problem — or he is the problem,” Alamzy said in a sharply-worded commentary.
He explained that Dr. Bawumia’s emergence as a running mate to then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was not through the usual competitive party structures, but rather through a special waiver that overlooked other capable members of the party.
“Nana Akufo-Addo, the then presidential candidate, went in for a waiver and brought in Bawumia as a running mate. The fact is that even then, the party had competent personnel and committed members who could have easily taken up that role,” he said.
Alamzy noted that despite initial reservations, party members accepted Bawumia, who subsequently rose to become Vice President after multiple electoral attempts. However, he argued that President Akufo-Addo later used state machinery to push Bawumia’s presidential ambitions — a move he said backfired.
“When Akufo-Addo’s tenure was winding down, he shipped all government appointees and major party stakeholders to support Bawumia. They all went with it, and yet he lost — woefully,” he remarked.
The Chiana-Paga MP accused the NPP of pampering Bawumia from the beginning, saying he has enjoyed unprecedented favoritism in Ghana’s political history.
“He’s the only pampered presidential candidate we’ve ever seen. He was brought in with a waiver, kept on, made Vice President, and then handed all government support to become a flagbearer. He would not receive pampering more than this,” Alamzy stressed.
He warned that efforts to make Bawumia the party’s flagbearer again are being driven by dubious methods.
“The means they are trying to use — I want to be careful with my words — but to me, the means are fraudulent,” he concluded.
Mr. Alamzy’s remarks are likely to spark fresh debate within the NPP as the party grapples with internal divisions and questions about leadership direction ahead of future election
