Gov't Must Suspend 2.45% Tariff Increment On Electricity- CUTS International

The Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS International) has condemned the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s decision to impose a 2.45% increase on electricity tariffs. According to the West Africa Regional Director for CUTS INTERNATIONAL, Appiah Kusi Adomako the decision must be suspended to allow for further consultation with stakeholders before implementation.

”Already we are paying for various tariffs on electricity so adding 2.45% to it is unacceptable and so it must be suspended to allow for further consultation before implementation”, he told Awuraabena Boateng on News 247 Live on Wednesday.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across all customer categories, effective 1st July 2025, as part of its quarterly review mechanism.

The tariff adjustment, which applies to residential, non-residential, and special load tariff (SLT) customers, is based on a detailed analysis of macroeconomic and operational factors, including inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel costs.

According to a statement issued by the Commission, the upward review is necessary to sustain utility service providers and ensure a reliable electricity supply.

But reacting to the increment, Kusi Adomako expressed disappointment at the Electricity Company of Ghana for passing its inefficiency onto the consumer.
