2025 BECE: Candidate,14, Dies During Examination at Assin Adeambra

A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate, Awudu Gariba, tragically passed away on Friday, June 13, 2025, when he was rushed to Assin Fosu Polyclinic during the first paper at the Adiembra Examination Centre in the Assin South District of Central Region.

Awudu, a student of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, reportedly began exhibiting signs of illness during the previous day’s examination.

After completing the paper, he was taken to the Assin Adiembra CHPS compound for medical attention.

However, due to the ongoing nurses’ strike, no medical personnel were available to attend to him. Consequently, he was rushed to the Assin Fosu Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Assin South District Education Director, Isaac Opoku expressed profound shock over the untimely demise of the young student. He confirmed that arrangements are being made to inform Awudu’s parents about the tragic incident.

The headteacher of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, Mr. Frederick Agyei recounted that , Awudu had shown signs of illness during the previous day’s examination. He emphasized the school’s efforts to seek medical assistance promptly, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and urging the community and other candidates to remain calm

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Assin South mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
