Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has revealed that he has been banned from stepping onto the pitch to protect the Inter Miami star, as Major League Soccer (MLS) enforces new security measures.
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, has been a key part of Messi’s security team since the Argentine legend moved to the United States in 2023. He was regularly seen patrolling the sidelines and stepping in to tackle pitch invaders attempting to approach the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner during matches.
However, MLS has now restricted his role to off-field protection, preventing him from intervening during games. Speaking to House of Highlights, Cheuko confirmed the ban, saying, “They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore.”
The security expert also highlighted the growing issue of pitch invasions in the U.S., noting that he had witnessed significantly more incidents since arriving in MLS.
“I was in Europe for seven years working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
Despite the ban, Cheuko expressed his commitment to working with MLS to improve security standards.
“I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I’m not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. It’s fine, I understand their decision, but I think we could do better.”
With Messi’s immense global popularity, MLS faces mounting pressure to enhance security protocols, ensuring the safety of the superstar while maintaining the integrity of the game.
