Ken Agyapong will contest NPP flagbearer race for 2028 elections – Brother confirms

Kennedy Agyapong, a key figure in Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former presidential aspirant, is set to contest the party’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

His decision was confirmed by his brother, Ralph Agyapong, during an interview with Kings Jersey TV in the United States on March 15, 2025.

Ralph noted that shifting internal dynamics within the NPP now favor Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy, positioning him strategically for the upcoming primaries.

“I can tell you on authority that he will contest the presidency or the NPP primaries, hopefully, next year, because we might have an early congress. He will be on the ballot paper,” Ralph Agyapong stated.

Kennedy Agyapong previously contested in the NPP’s 2024 presidential primaries, finishing second in the Super Delegates Conference with 14.30% of the vote, behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 61.47%. Despite falling short, his strong performance demonstrated significant support within the party.

According to Ralph Agyapong, the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections has prompted many party members to reconsider their support for Dr. Bawumia, further strengthening his brother’s chances in the 2028 primaries.

“As I speak, a lot of people have made a U-turn,” he remarked, indicating growing backing for Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the next internal contest.

Reflecting on the 2024 primaries, Ralph described his brother’s campaign as an uphill battle against both internal and external party forces. He also hinted at the possibility of an early congress to select the NPP’s flagbearer, potentially accelerating Kennedy Agyapong’s return to the presidential race.

Criticizing the NPP’s 2024 election strategy, Ralph Agyapong attributed the party’s loss to ineffective campaign tactics and stressed the need for fresh leadership to reposition the party for 2028.

“The strategy that was used did not help the party to win,” he stated, suggesting that Kennedy Agyapong represents the strong, relatable candidate needed to lead the NPP forward.

With the party gearing up for a competitive primary, Kennedy Agyapong’s early declaration is likely to shape the contest as NPP members and supporters closely watch the unfolding dynamics.
