President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the need for fiscal discipline in his administration, cautioning deputy ministers that public funds must benefit Ghanaians, not government officials.
Speaking at Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, during the swearing-in of 13 deputy ministers and a minister of state, the President emphasised that his approach to a lean government is rooted in responsible spending.
“Our decision to run a lean government is not just about reducing the number of ministers or staff at the Presidency,” he stated.
“It is based on the principle that public resources must be used wisely. Government must exercise financial discipline to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and responsibly.”
He stressed that government spending must be balanced with the financial burden placed on citizens through taxation.
“Public funds must go primarily into investments that directly benefit Ghanaians. Those who oversee these funds must not be the biggest beneficiaries,” he warned.
The President’s remarks follow his administration’s decision to cut down on political appointments, with only ministries requiring additional support receiving deputy ministers.
He also announced a reduction in the number of presidential staffers compared to the previous government.
