GOC sets April 26 for Elective Congress

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced April 26, 2025, as the new date for its much-anticipated elective Congress.

The decision was taken during the GOC’s Annual Congress, held on January 25 at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium Conference Centre in Accra.

Initially slated for March 15, the election date was rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts, including the ANOCA elections and the Winter Olympics.

GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah explained that the change would provide a smoother transition for incoming leaders.

“Moving the date gives the new administration the opportunity to start on a fresh note without overlapping events,” he said.

Former GOC President Professor Francis Dodoo had also suggested an earlier April date, sparking deliberations among members.

The proposal to finalise April 26 as the election date came from Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini, who argued it would allow sufficient time to resolve any outstanding issues before the vote.

His motion was seconded by Ghana Rowing and Canoeing President Kamal Sulley and unanimously approved by Congress.

To ensure a transparent and well-organised election, Congress approved a three-member team to oversee the process.

The team includes former Ghana Boxing Association President Peter R. Zwennes Esq, Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Treasurer Ibrahim Ali, and D.C.O.P Lydia Donkor.

Their appointments received unanimous backing from the assembly.

In the previous elections, incumbent President Ben Nunoo Mensah triumphed over his then-General Secretary, Richard Akpokavi, to secure the presidency.

Mr Nunoo Mensah has been President since March 2017, when he won the contest against Professor Francis Dodoo, who was recently appointed Presidential Advisor, National Anti-Corruption Programme by President John Mahama.
