NPP withdraws from Media General platforms over alleged bias

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its withdrawal from all Media General platforms, including TV3, 3 FM, and Onua TV, citing persistent bias and unprofessional conduct.

This decision was communicated in a press release dated January 27, 2025, and signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah.

“This notice is to announce the withdrawal of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from all Media General platforms. This decision comes after months of engagement with the production team, hosts, and management of Media General to address concerns regarding unprintable attacks on leading figures of our party, biased paneling of guests, and disruptive hosting of political shows designed primarily to drown and create doubt about the submissions of our representatives. Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed unprofessionalism and unfairness persist,” the statement read.

The NPP highlighted instances of bias, referencing a recent program hosted by Keminni Amanor where a guest allegedly insulted former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo without any intervention from the host. “Strangely, the host did not stop or object to the unwarranted attacks on the former president; she merely laughed them off. She allowed them,” the statement added.

The party also accused Media General’s political shows, particularly Key Points and Newday, of favoring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by frequently featuring panels with a majority of NDC-aligned guests against a single NPP representative. “Our calls to balance the invitations to the program have fallen on pretentious deaf ears,” the NPP stated.

Despite the challenges, the NPP claimed to have adhered to an agreement with Media General’s management to address the alleged bias. However, “the change has not happened, and from all indications, it may not occur. Hence, we have decided to withdraw,” the statement concluded.

The NPP assured its supporters and the public that its commitment to holding the “already failing John Mahama Administration” accountable remains unchanged. “We will fulfill our responsibilities as the largest opposition party in Ghana, God being our help,” the release affirmed.

The party has called on all its members to comply with the directive “until further notice.”
