The Minister-Designate for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Sam George, has pledged to take a firm stance against Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that fail to meet service quality standards, warning that fines will be imposed when necessary.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, the Ningo-Prampram MP stressed the need for reliable telecommunications services and assured that regulatory measures, including financial penalties, would be strictly enforced to hold network providers accountable.
He further stated that, if approved as minister, he would work closely with regulators to expand spectrum availability for MNOs while ensuring strict compliance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
“There is a lot of work that the telcos have to do. The government also has to do some work because for you to get access to a better quality of experience, you have to allocate more spectrum to the MNOs.
“As minister-designate, if approved, one of the things I work with the regulators is to make more spectrum available to the MNOs, however, we will be reining in the KPIs and ensuring that the standards are met.
“I will not be a minister who will be afraid to impose fines on MNOs who fail to meet the quality of service. Ghanaians deserve the best quality of service and we would crack the whip when necessary.
“But we will also support the MNOs to ensure that they get what is needed to provide us with the best quality of service,” he stated.
