Police question EC Officer over unauthorised transport of election materials

The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified an incident involving the District Electoral Officer (DEO) for Afadjato South in the Volta Region, who was questioned by Police on Thursday, December 5, for transporting election materials in a private vehicle without the required Police escort.

In a statement, the EC confirmed that the Police had taken custody of the materials and emphasised that its policy mandates the transportation of all election materials in official vehicles, accompanied by Police escort when necessary.

The statement, signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, noted that the EC will conduct internal investigations into the breach while fully cooperating with the Police in their ongoing investigations.

The Commission reassured the public that, despite the officer’s breach of protocol, the integrity of the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency remains uncompromised.

Below is the full statement

RE: POLICE QUESTIONS EC OFFICER OF AFADJATO SOUTH DISTRICT OVER ELECTION MATERIALS IN PRIVATE VEHICLE

The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that Officers of the Ghana Police Service yesterday questioned the Commission’s District Electoral Officer (DEO) of the Afadjato South in the Volta Region for transporting Election Materials in a private vehicle without Police escort. The Police subsequently took custody of the items.

The policy of the Commission is for its Officers to transport all Election Materials in official vehicles with Police escort where necessary. The Commission will conduct its own internal investigations while also cooperating with the Police in their investigations.

We wish to assure the Public that though the Officer breached the policy of the Commission, the actions of the Officer will not in any way compromise the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency.
Thank you.

Samuel Tettey Deputy Chairman, Operations
