Ghana commits $250 million to AI hub

Ghana has announced a $250 million investment to establish a world-class artificial intelligence hub as part of its newly launched National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement on Friday, April 24, during the official launch of the strategy, describing the investment as a bold step toward positioning Ghana as a leading technology and innovation centre in West Africa.

According to the President, the planned AI hub will serve as a national computing centre that supports research, innovation, entrepreneurship and the development of local technology solutions.

He said the facility would provide the computing power, data infrastructure and digital resources needed for Ghanaian developers, researchers and startups to compete globally.

Mahama noted that artificial intelligence has become a key driver of growth in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, taxation and public administration.

He explained that the investment would help Ghana harness these opportunities while creating jobs and strengthening institutions.

“The proposed AI Computing Centre will serve as a centre for research, innovation and enterprise, enabling Ghanaian talent to build solutions not only for our country, but also for the wider African continent,” he said.

In addition to the $250 million commitment, government also pledged $20 million to support the short- to medium-term implementation of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

The President said Ghana’s broader ambition is to become a leading AI hub in Africa by promoting innovation, skills development and responsible technology adoption.

As part of the strategy, government is also expanding digital training through the One Million Coders programme, which aims to equip young people with AI and coding skills.

Mahama stressed that strong infrastructure such as data centres, connectivity and energy systems would be essential to the success of the country’s AI agenda.

The new AI hub is expected to attract investment, support startups, create employment opportunities and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global digital economy.
